Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas rode another solid start by Jackson Wolf for their third victory in five games over the visiting Isotopes. After allowing three runs in the first inning, Wolf bounced back with five scoreless, setting down nine of the final 10 batters he faced. Despite only hitting 90 mph a few times in his outing, Wolf led all pitchers on the evening with nine swings and misses as he continued to find success by mixing all four of his pitches and throwing them in any count. In his first three starts back with the Padres organization, he gave up 11 earned runs across ten innings. He has allowed six runs in 21.2 innings in his last four starts. … Eguy Rosario took righty John Curtiss deep for his first Triple-A home run since being sent down from San Diego. The 24-year-old has six hits and just four strikeouts in his first five games. … Brett Sullivan also had a good night, reaching base three times and pulling a 407 foot home run to right field in the eighth inning. The left-handed hitter is having another strong year in Sun City, hitting .327/.388/.615.
Frisco RoughRiders 12, Missions 1
Key Statistics: C Juan Zabala 1-for-3, BB; 3B Ripken Reyes 2-for-3, RBI; RHP Victor Lizarraga (L, 0-2) 3 IP, 6 H, 7 R (5 ER), 2 BB, 2 K; LHP Jayvien Sandridge 1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB, K

Prospect Watch: The thinned out Missions continued to struggle on the road, dropping their sixth out of seven games. They’ve been held to two runs or less in four of those contests, leaving San Antonio to rely on strong starting pitching. Victor Lizarraga wasn’t able to deliver on Saturday, laboring through three innings. The 6-foot-3 Tijuana native didn’t allow a run across 8.2 innings in his first three outings, but he has now given up nine earned over 6.1 innings in his last two appearances. When he’s on, Lizarraga thrives by pitching backward, landing his breaking pitches and a changeup that is his best weapon, then finishing hitters off with low 90s fastballs on the corners. He can get in trouble when he’s not landing his breaking pitches early for strikes. … Offensively, San Antonio was held to five hits on the evening, and only Ripken Reyes had more than one. Only Cole Cummings (.791) and the recently acquired Robbie Tenerowicz (.790) are the only Missions with an OPS over .700.

Dylan Lesko continues to struggle with his control in 2024.. (Photo: Jeff Nycz)
Prospect Watch: After trailing 3-1 going into the eighth inning, the TinCaps rallied to tie the game, but the Whitecaps pulled back ahead in the bottom of the frame and proceeded to strike out the TinCaps in order in the ninth to end the game. Since sweeping a doubleheader against Lake County on May 2, Fort Wayne has lost seven of eight games and fallen to the cellar of the Midwest League. … While Dylan Lesko was better than his last outing, when he couldn’t get out of the first inning, he continues to fight significant issues with his control. The club’s top pitching prospect hung in there despite needing 29 pitches to get through the first, ultimately tossing 77 as he allowed three runs across 3.2 innings. Lesko walked three batters and hit four – including one player twice. The Midwest League still can’t hit Lesko; he is holding the opposition to a .164 batting average on the season, but his walk rate has driven his ERA up to 9.00. In just 19 innings this year, he has already walked 23 batters, more than he gave up in 33 innings last season as he returned from Tommy John surgery. … Homer Bush Jr. collected a two of the TinCaps’ six hits, including his second double of the series. Bush is hitting .353/.405/.412 in May, a noted improvement over his .546 OPS in April.

Isaiah Lowe had the best outing of his career. (Photo: Robert Escalante)
Storm 3, Inland Empire 66ers 0
Key Statistics: RF Braedon Karpathios 2-for-4; DH J.D. Gonzalez 0-for-1, 3 BB; LF Ryan Wilson 1-for-3, RBI, BB; 2B Jose Sanabria 1-for-3, 2B, BB; RHP Isaiah Lowe 4 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 9 K; RHP Dwayne Matos (W, 2-2) 2.2 IP H, 6 K; RHP Will Varmette 1.1 IP, BB; RHP Xavier Ruiz 1 IP, K
Prospect Watch: Isaiah Lowe had his longest and best outing of the year to help the Storm to their third win in five games against Inland Empire. The 21-year-old, who is being built up slowly after an injury-shortened 2023, struck out a career-high nine batters over four innings. Lowe was an above-slot signee out of high school in North Carolina in the Padres’ strong 2022 draft class, and staff across the organization have always been very high on him. A physically mature righty, Lowe can dial it up to 97, though he’s not working there consistently yet. … As good as Lowe was, Dwayne Matos may have been even better, as he struck out six batters in 2.2 innings. Matos, 23, struggled to a 6.02 ERA in Fort Wayne last year, but after a rocky start this year, he’s has not allowed a run while striking out seven in his last eight innings. … outfielder Ryan Wilson had the game’s only RBI on a double to right in the seventh. The 22-year-old has drawn 22 walks on the year to bolster a .390 on-base percentage, but he has just three extra-base hits on the year.
ACL Rockies 12, ACL Padres 3 (7 innings)
Key Statistics: SS B.Y. Choi 1-for-3, HR, RBI; RF Kaden Hollow 1-for-3, 2B, RBI; 1B Addison Kopack 1-for-2, 2B, BB, RBI; RHP Yerry Landinez IP, K, 2 BB; RHP Henry Martinez 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, BB, K; LHP Yovannki Pascual (L,0-1) 0.2 IP 4 H, 4 R (3 ER) BB
Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres dropped their second game in a row as the Rockies affiliate took advantage of 10 free passes. Even with the abbreviated games being played in the desert, the Padres had to turn to catcher Jesus Castro to get the last two outs of the game. … The ACL starting earlier this year means players who didn’t make full-season rosters, particularly late-round picks and undrafted free agents, are getting real competition as opposed to endless scrimmages. As Kevin noted yesterday, one player taking advantage of the opportunity is B.Y. Choi, 22, who connected on his second homer in as many days. A 6-foot-3 left-handed hitter who the Padres selected in the 20th round last year, Choi had only two hits in 22 plate appearances last season. The Korean-born infielder is off to a hot start, batting .350/.480/.750 in 25 plate appearances. … Kaden Hollow, 23, had a double and an RBI and is hitting .364 with a 1.199 OPS in his third season since signing as an undrafted free agent. The left-handed hitter is primarily a catcher, but also played some first base in college. He got his first opportunity in the outfield Saturday and seems a likely candidate to take the next open spot in Lake Elsinore. … Addison Kopack, 22, an undrafted free agent last year, had an unusual defensive profile in college as second base, shortstop, and catcher. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound University of Rhode Island product was primarily a second baseman in his junior year, but the organization is currently working him at catcher and at first base. After a double and walk, he is hitting .412 with a 1.088 OPS. … Yerry Landinez made his third rehab appearance of the week, walking two in a scoreless inning. The big right-hander will likely be ticketed for the Lake Elsinore bullpen in the coming days.
